About school:

The basic school for handicapped children “Svetliachiok” was founded in 1991 on the initiative of parents and teachers. It was the first non-governmental school in Lithuania.

The school has very democratic traditions. It is opened to Lithuanian and Russian children. Together with handicapped children study pupils without any learning problems. The age of the smallest pupils is 3 and the oldest are 21. It was long-lasting experiment and now we can say it was a success.

Most of the pupils at our school have serious physical and mental disabilities. The classes at “Svetliachiok” are formed not according to the age of the pupils but in correspondence to their intellectual possibilities and personal interests. Children are taught by the individual educational plans.

The school art studies give the pupils a wonderful opportunity to relax, to express themselves through arts, to neutralize negative emotions, to learn more about the world. At the school workshops children wave, make things of ceramics, souvenirs, get knowledge about materials, train working skills and learn how to organize working process.

The school medical service offers to children different kinds of physical training and therapy and helps to bring the children into the maximum possible healthy state.

The main activities of the school:
1. Training and education of children with special needs according to individualized special education programs.
2. Medical rehabilitation with physiotherapy: massage, kinesitherapy, paraffin applications (warming procedures), light therapy using the device “Bioptron” that generates the sunlight, heat therapy infrared sauna, oxygen cocktails.
4. Development of creativity: teaching techniques of floristics, ceramics, decoupage, decorative painting on glass.
5. Psychotherapeutic assistance: art and music therapy.
6. Social Adaptation: development and training of social skills (hygiene, household, work, communication).

The school is maintained by 28 professionals who prove educational and rehabilitation services: 10 teachers, 3 speech therapists, 2 music teachers, 2 kinesitherapist, English language teacher, History teacher, teacher of physical training, specialist in art therapy, specialist in music therapy, handcraft teacher, specialists in ceramics and floristry, ergotherapist, social educator, careers, social workers.
